The Seth Cheney House, located at 139 Hartford Road in Manchester, provides Guests an opportunity to spend time in what was once the home of Seth and Kathleen Cheney, members of the Cheney family,. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Homes, the Cheneys were successful silk manufacturers in the mid to late 1800’s and built their mansion homes in a park like area in what is now the Historic District of Manchester.
Originally built for Rush Cheney in the late 1800s, the house was doubled in size near the turn of the century. When Seth Leslie Cheney and his wife Katherine Bell Cheney moved in about 1933, it was tripled in size to it's current size of almost 6,000 square feet
The house is situated in the Cheney Historic District, just up from the Cheney Homestead. Occupying about 70 acres are 13 Cheney family mansions. Dating from 1785 to 1911, they rest in a little-altered park-like setting, represent individual Cheney family members throughout the history of their family silk-making enterprise, and illustrate vividly the life style of successful New England textile mill owners.
The home has been home to Artists and Spiritualists including Mrs. Emeline Cheney (widow of Arthur Cheney), a friend and confidant of Isabella Beecher Hooker. Today, the house is a bed-and-breakfast known as the Seth Cheney House, formerly the Mansion Inn Bed and Breakfast.
The home was built with custom woodwork and detail throughout, and has 8 working fireplaces. There is a large living room and a dining room that seats 20 comfortably. We have combined new furnishings with choice antiques, original artwork, new rugs and refinished original hardwood floors.throughout.
